Praise the Lord and Greetings in the name of Jesus

We are the first Apostolic church in Washington, D.C. celebrating more than 90 years of holiness and harvest in the Lord. With the help of the Lord, and standing on the Word of God and the Apostolic doctrine, we have continued unto this day. We invite you to worship and praise with us in the beauty of Holiness.

What We Believe

At The Way Back to Pentecost Church we base our beliefs and lifestyle on the Bible and its Kingdom principals. Based on Scripture, we believe…

About the Bible

The Bible is the immutable and infallible revealed Word of God and the only authority for salvation and a Godly lifestyle. 2 Timothy 3:15–17

About God

There is one God, who has revealed Himself as our Father, in His Son Jesus Christ, and as the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ is God manifested in the flesh. He is both God and man. Deuteronomy 6:4; Ephesians 4:4-6; Colossians 2:9; 1 Timothy 3:16

About Sin & Salvation

Everyone has sinned and needs salvation. Salvation comes by grace, through faith, based on the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Romans 3:23–25; 6:23; Ephesians 2:8–9

About the Gospel

The saving gospel is the good news that Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and rose again. We obey the gospel (2 Thessalonians 1:8; 1 Peter 4:17) by repentance (death to sin), water baptism in the name of Jesus Christ (burial), and receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit (resurrection). 1 Corinthians 15:1-4; Acts 2:4, 37 – 39; Romans 6:3 – 4

About Christian Living

As Christians, we are to love God and others. We should live a holy life inwardly and outwardly and worship God joyfully. The supernatural gifts of the Spirit, including healing, are for the church today. Mark 12:28; 2 Corinthians 7:1; Hebrews 12:14; 1 Corinthians 12:8-10

About the Future

Jesus Christ is coming again to rapture His church. In the end will be the final resurrection and the final judgement. The righteous will inherit eternal life; the unrighteous eternal death. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17; Revelation 20:11-15

Our History

from gathering worshiping above Detroit Glass; a garage at the intersection of Georgia and Florida Avenues. Together, these pillars of the church, formed what was to become the first Jesus Only church in the District of Columbia.

Although without an official name during this period, this apostolic church became the “mother church” for all Jesus Only churches in the Washington, D.C. area. The congregation was led by men such as Elder Schooler followed by Elder Jamison. After Elder Jamison’s departure, the saints began praying for a pastor that would lead them and watch over their souls. In prayer the Lord spoke to a Deacon by the name of Horace Temple and told him that “he was good enough for this people.” Deacon Temple was elevated to an Elder and to the pastorship.

It was during his patorship in October 1930 that Elder Horace Temple had a vision of a banner waving with the inscribed words: The Way Back to Pentecost. The church became certified by the District of Columbia Government in May 1947 as The Way Back to Pentecost Church of Washington, D.C. with Elder Horace Temple as its first official pastor. Sister Mary W. Page (Temple), Deacon Norman McCoy, and Deacon William Garett served with Pastor Temple as the first officers of the church.

The congregation worshipped above an old storefront that sold chickens and housed a horse stable in the rear. After the store owners moved out an industrious group of spiritual sisters cleaned out the building so that it could be used as a church. Elder Temple worked with his own hands to make the building more habitable. The humble beginnings are not forgotten.

God has blessed this church from its conception and has allowed it to blossom as a rose never to be plucked down. God has permitted it to grow internally and influence the lives of many. God has also allowed this assembly to branch off and expand into other communities. Thank God for a firm foundation
